Pixel Art Design: Why 8-Bit Still Sells (Play the Demo)

Pixel art is design with the resolution turned down on purpose. Learn the 5 rules, then play Pixo Run, a tiny platformer built in the style.

Pixel art design builds every image from a small grid of visible square pixels and a limited palette. It works in UI and branding when five rules are followed, and you can play a pixel game built in the style below.

Pixel art design is a visual style where every image is built from a small grid of visible square pixels, placed one by one with a limited colour palette.

Play it first

This is Pixo, our pixel mascot. Help him dodge bugs and deadline spikes. Grab coins for 10 points each.

The whole game is drawn from tiny text maps of coloured squares. No image files, no blur, five-ish colours.

Where it came from

  1. 1970s–80s Arcade and home consoles have tiny screens and little memory. Pixels are a limit, not a choice.
  2. 1984 Susan Kare designs the original Macintosh icons on a 32×32 grid. Proof that pixels can be friendly.
  3. 2010s Indie games like Minecraft, Shovel Knight and Celeste bring the look back as a deliberate style.
  4. Today Brands use it for mascots, launch pages and merch to signal "playful, made by humans, for people online".

The 5 rules

1. One pixel, one decision

Every square is placed on purpose. If you can't explain a pixel, delete it.

2. Limit the palette

Pick 4 to 16 colours and stick to them. Pixo Run uses roughly these five:

3. Hard edges only

No soft shadows, no blur, no anti-aliasing. Depth comes from offset shadows.

Pixel ✓Not pixel ✗

4. Scale by whole numbers

Draw small, then scale 2×, 3× or 4×. Odd scaling (like 1.5×) makes pixels uneven and blurry.

5. Keep the type readable

Use a pixel font for headings and labels only. Body copy stays in a clean font so people can actually read it.

Do vs don't

Do

Use pixel art for one hero element: a mascot, a game, an icon set. Keep the rest of the page clean.

Don't

Set paragraphs in a pixel font or mix pixel art with soft glassy UI. It reads as a mistake, not a vibe.

5 sites doing it well

  1. Lospec: the pixel artist's home base. Its palette list shows how much mood five colours can carry.
  2. Aseprite: a pixel editor whose own site wears the style it sells.
  3. Stardew Valley: proof pixel art can feel warm and cosy, not just retro.
  4. PICO-8: a fantasy console with a fixed 16-colour palette. Constraint as a product feature.
  5. NES.css: a whole CSS framework of 8-bit buttons and dialogs. Great reference for pixel UI.

When to use it for a client

Use it when the brand is playful, nerdy or nostalgic: games, dev tools, ed-tech for teens, creator merch, launch campaigns.

Skip it when the brand needs to feel premium or serious: luxury, healthcare, finance, B2B enterprise. One pixel mascot can still work there. A full pixel site won't.

What this means for your brand

One pixel mascot or icon set can give a brand character without hurting trust. pSkyro Labs shapes that kind of decision in branding and UI/UX design. More in the series: brutalism and glassmorphism.

Try it yourself

Pixel art is a constraint you choose on purpose. Choose it well and five colours will do the work of fifty.

FAQ

What is pixel art design?

Pixel art design is a visual style where images are built from a small grid of visible square pixels, placed by hand with a limited colour palette. It started as a hardware limit in early games and is now a deliberate retro aesthetic.

Is pixel art good for a business website?

Yes, for brands that want to feel playful, nostalgic or developer-friendly, like games, dev tools, creative studios and Gen Z products. Skip it for luxury, healthcare or finance, where it can read as unserious.

How do you keep pixel art sharp on a website?

Draw at a small size, scale by whole numbers (2×, 3×, 4×) and set image-rendering: pixelated in CSS so the browser doesn't blur the edges.

What size should pixel art be?

Common canvases are 16×16 or 32×32 for icons and sprites, and around 320×180 for scenes. Small canvases force the clean, readable shapes the style is known for.
