What is a brand identity?
Definition: A brand identity is the set of visual and verbal elements, including logo, colour, typography, imagery and tone of voice, that makes a business recognisable and consistent.
A brand identity is the system of logo, colour, type, imagery and voice that makes a business look and sound like itself everywhere. It is more than a logo. pSkyro Labs designs identities from strategy and positioning through to brand guidelines, so the system holds up after the project ends.
What does a brand identity include?
Typically a logo suite (mark and wordmark in the versions a business needs), a colour and type system, imagery style, voice and messaging, and guidelines that explain how to use all of it. Packaging, stationery and social templates apply the system to real things. A good identity is also flexible: it works on a phone screen, a printed invoice and a shop sign without looking like three different brands.
| Element | What it does |
|---|---|
| Logo suite | Gives the brand a mark that works small and large |
| Colour and type | Makes every page, pack and post look related |
| Imagery and graphics | Sets the visual mood |
| Voice and messaging | Keeps what the brand says consistent |
| Guidelines | Lets other people apply the identity without the original designer |
What is the difference between a logo and a brand identity?
A logo is one element. The identity is the whole system around it. A logo alone cannot tell a designer which colours to use on a pack or how a social post should look. Our branding service covers the whole system, not only the mark.
How does a brand identity project work?
At pSkyro Labs it moves from understanding the business, to positioning and messaging, to designing the identity, to building the full system and guidelines, then supporting the roll-out across website, social, packaging and sales material.
Why does it matter for a growing brand?
Consistency builds recognition and trust. It also makes later work cheaper, because new pages, ads and packs start from a system instead of a blank screen.
Real examples: Billfox, Chhyu and Naventum
BillFox, an invoicing product, got a logo where the lowercase 'b' doubles as a fox head, in deep blue with an orange accent. Chhyu, a tea brand named for the sound of brewing, got a wordmark, tea-garden imagery and packaging. Naventum, a design studio, got a logo system and a full set of brand guidelines. We have not published outcome numbers for these projects.
Questions people ask.
What is brand identity in simple terms?
How a brand looks and sounds: logo, colours, fonts, images and voice, used the same way everywhere.
Is brand identity the same as branding?
Branding is the wider work of positioning and perception. Identity is the visible and verbal system that expresses it.
What are brand guidelines?
A document that shows how to use the logo, colour, type and graphics, so anyone can stay consistent. Naventum's runs to dozens of pages.
How long does a brand identity take?
It depends on scope. We scope it on a short call and give a fixed quote.
Do you design packaging?
Packaging appears in our brand work, as in the Chhyu project. Confirm scope on the call.
